I don't think Step 2 is really doing anything for you if the settings don't save. Step 1 does bring the total processor usage down to 50% or so when compared to changing nothing. I think I found one better, though. While you have the Domino server running, open another terminal window, use su to login as root, and then open the java control panel. Give it about 15 seconds and then take a look at your processor usage again. If it does what I've seen here, you should notice it also, so please let me know what happens on your side. This also works without making the changes in Step 1, but of course the processor is pegged until opening the java control panel.
